LUNENBURG COUNTY — A Chase City man was run over and killed in a one-vehicle accident while lying in a road in Lunenburg County Tuesday evening, police said.
Ronald Elvin White, 25, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which took place at approximately 9 p.m. Tuesday on Route 734, about one-tenth of a mile from Route 1009, according to the Virginia State Police.
Michael Rashe Davis, 21, of Victoria, was driving a 1996 Lincoln sedan when he came over a slight hill and struck White, who was lying in the roadway, apparently asleep, according to the police report, which noted that White had been drinking, though it was not known if he was impaired due to alcohol.
The Lincoln struck White with its front undercarriage and then ran over him, then ran off the road to the right, police said. Davis overcorrected and crossed back over to the left and ran off the road into the ditch, according to investigating officer Senior Trooper J.B. Landry.
Davis was charged with driving while intoxicated. The road was wet due to a misting rain, and White was traveling 45 miles per hour in a 55 zone, although the safe speed for that section at that time was 35, according to the police report.
Police said a report is forthcoming from the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Richmond. An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
