MECKLENBURG COUNTY — Two Mecklenburg County residents were charged last week with the November murder of an Oxford, N.C. man, officials said.
Sandra Dee Small, 39, of Nelson and Terrell Freeman, 22, of Chase City were arrested on Dec. 11 in connection with the murder of Joseph Arrington Davis III, 48.
Sheriff Danny Fox, with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, said Thursday that the pair was arrested after “an intensive investigation.”
Fox said his department, the Vance (North Carolina) Sheriff’s Office, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office all assisted in the investigation.
Davis was found murdered in his home on Stagecoach Road by his nephew, Brandon Davis, on Saturday, Nov. 29 around 8:15 p.m., according to Vance County Sheriff Peter White. The date and time of death were not known.
White said Davis had last been seen in the community on Wednesday, Nov. 26.
Davis’s body had several shotgun wounds. The police suspect robbery was a motive in the crime.
Small and Freeman were charged in North Carolina with first-degree murder, White said.
Small was charged in Mecklenburg County with two counts of being a fugitive from justice, police said. Court records show she waived extradition and was transferred from the Mecklenburg County Jail to the Vance County (North Carolina) Sheriff’s Office to await a hearing.
Court records show that Small has a criminal record in Mecklenburg County that dates back to 1995 and includes forgery and possession of drugs. A failure to appear warrant was issued for her in February for non-compliance with her probation.
Small also has an incarceration record in North Carolina from a forgery conviction in 2002.
Freeman was charged with three counts of forgery and one count of felony probation violation in Mecklenburg County after being arrested. Freeman is being held at the Blue Rridge Regional Jail in Halifax while he awaits extradition. No bond has been set at this time.
Freeman pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine earlier this year and was sentenced to five years with all but six months suspended, according to court records.
White said the arrests were a result of the cooperation, hard work, dedication and teamwork between the law enforcement officials. He said the investigation into the murder is ongoing and more arrests may follow. |
