LAWRENCEVILLE - A ribbon was cut on Saturday, Nov. 14 to celebrate the completion of the Green Acres Community Improvement Project.
Leslie Sullivan, planning director, said Brunswick County received a Community Development Block Grant from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development for $1,332,157 to improve the Green Acres neighborhood through the rehabilitation of eight owner-occupied housing units, two investor-owned housing units and the substantial reconstruction of five housing units. One dilapidated structure was removed. Abandoned cars, old sheds, and debris were cleared.
Sullivan said infrastructure improvements consisted of the installation of 2,680 feet of six inch water lines and 2,800 feet of eight inch sewer that provides the residents with municipal water and sewer. Three fire hydrants were located in the community to provide fire protection.
Storm drainage and road improvements were also completed in the community. Two roads in the neighborhood, Green Acres Road and Lincoln Street, were brought up to the Virginia Department of Transportation standards for secondary roads.
Sullivan said this project benefited 45 people, 44 of whom were low-to-moderate income.
