Woman shot in South Hill Subway robbery

SOUTH HILL - The robbery of the South Hill Subway restaurant Monday night sent one employee to the hospital, and police are still searching for the man who shot the woman and took an undisclosed amount of money from the store.

Glory Reavis, 58, of South Hill was one of the employees on duty at the Subway located at 621 E. Atlantic Street at the time of the shooting. She was shot in the leg, according to reports.

The Southside Rescue Squad treated her at the scene and determined Reavis should be flown via helicopter to MCV in Richmond, due to a wound in the lower part of her leg.

South Hill Police Chief Norman Hudson said Tuesday morning, "The employee said the robber asked for a bag of cookies." He said Reavis proceeded to get the man the cookies and as she was opening the cash register he displayed a handgun and reached for the money.

Hudson said that Reavis reportedly closed the cash register drawer on the robber's hand and was subsequently shot.

The police responded to the E-911 call around 8:26 p.m. and called in the Mecklenburg County Sheriff Office's tracking dogs to attempt to locate the robber. Hudson said that the dogs tracked the robber around to the back of the Subway and through the woods. The dogs then lost the scent, he said.

The robber is described as an African-American male, about 6 feet tall, with a mustache. He was wearing a brown jacket with a hood. He had the hood pulled down over his face.

Roger Higgins, owner of the Subway, said Tuesday that Reavis is doing well and that the doctors say she may be able to come home by Wednesday. He said that Reavis had been working for Subway since the store opened, about 10 years. "We are thankful she is doing well," Higgins said. "She is a dedicated employee."

Higgins said that video surveillance cameras were able to capture the suspect's image.

Higgins said that his staff has thoroughly disinfected the store and they reopened for business Tuesday morning. Higgins also owns the Subway located in the Wal-Mart Supercenter.
